Climate Aspects of Akiing Azhenan
Bois Forte is managing their forests to grow into mature, healthy forests. As these forests grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and store it in their trunks, branches, and roots. This helps address climate change. The project is using a specific methodology (Verra’s VM0045 methodology) to track the amount of carbon the forest is able to store. To learn more about that methodology click here.
The methodology used for this project compares the forest management practices in the project area to practices applied by other forest managers on lands outside the project area. If the management practices in the project area result in more carbon on the land compared to the other areas, the project will generate carbon credits that can be verified by the standard and sold in the voluntary carbon market.

There are companies who are trying to reduce their climate impact. They first do that by addressing their own sources of emissions, through actions like using renewable energy, switching to electric vehicles, making their operations more efficient, or reducing their packaging. Often, they are unable to eliminate all of their emissions. In order to reach net zero emissions, these companies seek to buy carbon credits from the voluntary carbon market. The Bois Forte Carbon Project will produce carbon credits from their improved forest management activities and can sell those credits to companies on the voluntary carbon market.
