NOTICE: SORNA amendments
Statement by the Bois Forte Reservation Tribal Council
On February 11, 2025, the Bois Forte RTC adopted several measures to address this ongoing problem.
First, the RTC amended the Bois Forte Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (“SORNA”) Code to exclude all non-Bois Forte Band member sex offenders from the Band’s Territory.
Second, the RTC adopted a rule prohibiting the Bois Forte Tribal Government and Bois Forte enterprises from employing sex offenders effective August 20, 2025.
Finally, the RTC directed the Tribal Government and all Bois Forte enterprises to implement employment background checks and related suitability standards for all employees.
The RTC is committed to adopting measures to ensure the public safety of Band members and the Reservation community. Sexual violence continues to be an epidemic in Indian Country due to several factors, including gaps in jurisdiction and the federal government declining to prosecute certain crimes occurring on tribal lands.
