Avian Bird Flu confirmed in waterfowl on Nett Lake

Posted October 16, 2025

The Veterinary Diagnostic Lab at the University of Minnesota has identified a case of avian bird flu in a bird collected for testing on October 14.

Waterfowl hunters are advised that waterfowl hunting can continue and that waterfowl harvested during hunting season can be safely consumed provided that the collected meat is thoroughly cooked. Hunters or those handling birds during cleaning should wear disposable gloves.

Persons hunting or utilizing Nett Lake may notice the BFDNR airboat in use, as staff will be dispatched to look for and recover other possible infected birds. DNR will attempt to collect during times when no hunters are apparent on the lake so as not to disturb hunting activity.
