tmason@boisforte-nsn.govIt’s that time of a year again and the bears are up and walking around looking for food. Take into consideration that we live so close to the bear sanctuary that there will be some bears venturing into the village to find “easy” food sources, (garbage, bird feeders, dog/cat food).
Here are a few tips on keeping the bears to a minimum in the village this year.
*If everyone could help and please follow these suggested tips, especially properly storing and disposing of garbage the bears would have no reason to stay in the heavily problem areas and move on.*
Any questions, comments, spotting, or suggestions of bears, please contact the Conservation Officer.
Seasons are subject to change per Conservation Committee.
Limit of 4, either sex
(Guiding will follow MN State/Season Regultions)

Hunters are required to have a hunting permit in their possession while hunting and adhere to the Bois Forte Conservation Code.
The Bois Forte Tribal Council through the 1854 Treaty Authority has adopted a set of regulations entitled “The Bois Forte Code for Non-Commercial Netting of Game Fish in the Waters Adjacent to the Vermilion Reservation” which will apply to all Non-Commercial game fish netting activities.
All band members participating in this activity are required to abide by the rules therein. Each permittee will receive a copy of the regulations upon receipt of a valid netting permit.

January 1 – December 31, 2021 (Excluding May 31 – September 15, 2021)
Bois Forte approved a temporary amendment during COVID which allows for use of an 1854 ID or Bois Forte Tribal ID as the only requirement for the 2021 netting season (no netting permit required for 2021).
No band member may set or remove a net under this code without wearing or having in their watercraft a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for each person. PLEASE NOTE: Type IV PFD’s (throwable types) are no longer legal under the code.
All nets shall be identified with the Band member’s name and Ceded Territory Identification Card number plainly printed with an indelible marker on the first float on one end of the float line.
Each gillnet shall be marked with two buoys, one on each end of the gillnet. Each gillnet should have a highly visible marking device whether it be a flag, brightly colored buoy or both, to prevent damage by passing watercraft. “Highly visible” means that the marking device is a color that can be seen in low light conditions and is a size that is easily discerned with the naked eye.
*If you have any questions about the net marking requirement, please contact an 1854 or Bois Forte Conservation Officer (see contact numbers above).
